About Reserva Natural Cultural Iriapú
This is the patch of rainforest known as Selva Iryapú or "the 600 hectares", between downtown Puerto Iguazú and the road to the falls. A 2004 provincial law made it a natural and cultural reserve and recognized land for the Mbyá Guaraní communities; another part of the area is taken up by jungle hotels. Communities such as Yryapú, Jasy Porã, Ita Poty Mirĩ and Tupã Mba'e live here, and several run their own community tourism projects.
Tours are led by community members and usually include a forest trail with explanations of medicinal plants and traditional hunting traps, songs by the children's choir, and handicrafts for sale such as baskets, seed necklaces and small carved animals. At Ita Poty Mirĩ you also walk to a lookout by the Yy Araku lagoon, a good spot for birdwatching. This isn't a theme park: people live here, so visit by appointment and with respect.
Local tip
Buy handicrafts on the spot from the people who make them: community tourism and craft sales are part of the communities' own income.
Practical guide
Before you go
- Don't walk into the villages on your own: they're living communities. Go by appointment and with a community guide.
- Ask before photographing people, especially children.
- The Fortín Mbororé village is not inside this reserve: it's in another part of Iguazú and runs its own visits.
What to do
- Take a guided visit to a Mbyá community, led by its own members
- Walk interpretive trails on medicinal plants and hunting traps
- Listen to traditional songs by the children's choir
- Buy handicrafts directly from the people who make them
- Birdwatch at the Yy Araku lagoon lookout (Ita Poty Mirĩ)
- How long
- About 2 hours per visit (up to 4 with lunch, depending on the community)
- Who it suits
- Travelers genuinely interested in Guaraní culture and the forest, families and students. Not for anyone after a show or quick photos.
- Best time to go
- Year-round. In summer go early to beat the heat; after heavy rain the red-earth trails get slippery.
- Opening hours
