## Description

The Devil's Throat is a U-shaped canyon where much of the Iguazú River gathers and plunges more than 80 meters. From the final balcony the drop is just a few meters away, the roar drowns out voices and a column of mist rises and soaks you. It is the image most people link with Iguazú.

To get there you take the jungle train to Estación Garganta and then walk a 1.1 km walkway over the river: 2,200 m round trip, about 90 minutes with stops, fully accessible. There is also an alternative 2.3 km footpath. Note: the walk has been closed as a precaution since 3 August 2026. With floods forecast because of El Niño, the floors and railings were dismantled so the river wouldn't carry them off, as happened in 2023 with 79 sections. According to the park, putting them back would take 30 to 60 days once the water drops.

## Local tip

If it's still closed, don't write off the trip: the park superintendent recommends the Lower Circuit, with several viewpoints right by the falls.

## Practical guide

**Before you go:**
- Closed as a precaution since 3 Aug 2026; on 16 Sep it was announced it would stay shut at least 40 more days. Check before you go.
- After the flood, reinstalling the walkways takes 30 to 60 days, according to the park superintendent.
- Even when open, it can close without notice if the river rises suddenly, as it did in July 2026.

**What to do:**
- Ride the train to Estación Garganta once the walk reopens
- Walk the 1.1 km walkway over the river to the balcony
- Feel the mist and roar of the drop from the final viewpoint
- While it's closed, walk the Upper and Lower Circuits, which remain open

- **How long:** About 90 minutes for the round-trip walkway, plus the train ride
- **Who it suits:** Everyone: the train and walkway are fully accessible. It's the spot that impresses first-timers the most.
- **Best time:** It only opens when the flow is safe: in 2026 it closed once the river passed 6,500 m³/s. When it reopens, go early to avoid the train line.
- **Getting there:** Inside Iguazú National Park: jungle train from Estación Central to Estación Garganta (usually first departure 8:20 am, last 3:30 pm, last return 5:30 pm), then the walkway. On foot: 2.3 km alternative path.
- **Admission and prices:** Included in the general park ticket, which also covers the train.
- **Booking:** Not needed · No separate booking: the train turn is free and handed out at the ticket office.
- **Accessibility:** Train and walkway fully accessible; free manual wheelchairs at the stations, pushed by a companion.
